Description

The Ukrainian Bandurist Chorus performed at an Ukrainian Independence Gala in Detroit on January 24, 1982. Before the fall of the USSR in 1991, Ukrainian Independence was always celebrated on January 22 - the day Independence was declared in 1918. Western Ukraine declared its Independence on Nov 1, 1918, and then the Unification of the Ukrainian lands occurred on Jan 22, 1919. The Chorus is led by the legendary composer Hryhory Kytasty to multiple ovations and several encores. Then the chorus sings the national anthem with the audience to conclude the event. Apologies for the degraded video - I found this old VHS tape only recently. Audio is still very magnificent. At this point I was in the chorus already 5 years and soloist for 4.
